The Diriyah Biennale Foundation today opened the second edition of the Islamic Arts Biennale 2025 under the theme "And All That Is In Between," which will run until next May 25. The event is being held at the Hajj Terminal of King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah, a venue that stands as a symbol of cultural diversity and a gateway through which millions of pilgrims pass each year, carrying with them memories and spiritual experiences.

The biennale offers a unique artistic experience across 100,000 square meters, including indoor galleries and outdoor spaces. It explores the relationship between historic artifacts and contemporary artworks, showcasing more than 500 pieces, including archaeological artifacts, historic objects, and contemporary artworks, spread across five galleries under a title inspired by a Quranic verse, "And All That Is In Between," which speaks to the grandeur of God's creation as perceived by humankind.

International Loans and Cultural Experiences

The biennale features works on loan from prominent international institutions, including:

  • The Louvre Museum (Paris)
  • The Victoria and Albert Museum (London)
  • The Museum of Islamic Art (Doha)
  • The Ahmed Baba Institute (Timbuktu)

It also features the first-ever display of the complete Kaaba kiswah (covering) outside Makkah, giving visitors a rare opportunity to engage with a precious piece of Islamic heritage.

Artists and New Commissions

The event includes works by more than 30 artists from around the world, including 29 new artworks specially commissioned by the Diriyah Biennale Foundation. Participants include Saudi artist Muhannad Shono, alongside international curators such as Dr. Julian Raby and Dr. Amin Jaffer.

The Biennale's Sections and Cultural Program

The Islamic Arts Biennale is organized into seven distinct sections:

  1. Al Bidayah (The Beginning)
  2. Al Madar (The Orbit)
  3. Al Muqtani (The Collector)
  4. Al Muzallah (The Canopy)
  5. Al Mukarramah (The Honored)
  6. Al Munawwarah (The Illuminated)
  7. Al Musalla (The Prayer Hall)

Alongside the exhibits, the biennale offers a rich cultural program including workshops, lectures and interactive seminars, such as the "Biennale After School" and "Biennale After Work" initiatives, giving the community a chance to explore the arts in hands-on, engaging ways.
