King Saud University opens Space Week with orbital sustainability discussion
King Saud University’s College of Science opened its World Space Week programme in Riyadh on October 4, 2026, with a sustainability discussion and an accompanying exhibition. The programme runs through October 8.
According to SPA’s session report, participants examined sustainability throughout a mission’s lifecycle, from design and launch to operations and retirement. Discussion covered protecting orbital space as a limited resource, balancing debris prevention with removal, and using international cooperation, regulation and economic incentives to reduce future risks.
Monday’s scheduled lectures cover stars and supermassive black holes, photonics and space technology, and solar flares and space weather. Later activities include school visits to the astronomy museum and observatory within the Department of Physics and Astronomy, extending the college’s scientific outreach to younger audiences.
