'Wood Carving' Workshop at Islamic Arts Biennale Evokes the Beauty of Hijazi Heritage Through Geometric Design
JEDDAH — In an atmosphere blending craft and identity, the Islamic Arts Biennale 2025, organized by the Diriyah Biennale Foundation, held an art workshop titled "Wood Carving" as part of its diverse cultural program, at the Western Hajj Terminal of King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah.
The workshop gave visitors a rare opportunity to discover hand wood-carving techniques inspired by geometric patterns from traditional Hijazi architecture, guiding participants through the steps of turning a design into a living artwork on 15x15 cm wooden panels using traditional carving tools.
The experience included:
- Learning geometric patterns drawn from Islamic heritage
- Printing and carving designs onto wood
- Combining different patterns into a collaborative artwork
Attendees engaged enthusiastically with the workshop, which brought together Islamic art and hand craftsmanship in an inspiring experience that revives traditional crafts with a contemporary spirit and promotes community participation in the visual arts through a collective artwork made up of individually carved wooden tiles.
The event is part of a series of workshops and activities hosted by the Islamic Arts Biennale, affirming its role as a global cultural platform connecting the present with the heritage of the Islamic nation through contemporary artistic expression.
