"Mothers' Work in Days Gone By" at the Eighth Al-Atawlah Festival Revives Rural Memory and Captivates Visitors in Al-Baha
Al-Baha | 2 August 2025. In an exceptional scene evoking the scent of the past, the eighth Al-Atawlah Festival in Al-Baha region hosted a heritage event titled "Mothers' Work in Days Gone By," offering visitors an interactive experience that highlighted the central roles women once played in traditional rural life, through live demonstrations of mothers' skills in managing household and community affairs of old.
The event featured a series of hands-on demonstrations ranging from preparing traditional foods, spinning wool, weaving mats and hand-woven baskets, gathering firewood, and baking bread on a saj griddle, using the traditional tools of that era, in scenes brimming with life that took attendees back to a time of simplicity and communal work.
A group of young women performed these demonstrations, precisely and devotedly mimicking the old working methods, drawing notable interest from visitors, especially children and teenagers, who found in the scenes a source of inspiration and knowledge, with many keen to interact directly and document the moments through photos and videos.
The event is part of the core programs of the eighth Al-Atawlah Festival, held annually to revive local heritage and introduce new generations to the values, customs and traditions of the past, as organizers focus on blending entertainment with cultural education as a means of strengthening national identity and connecting the community with its authentic roots.
The wide attendance and public engagement with the event reflect the success of the festival's vision of turning heritage into a living, contemporary experience that touches hearts and documents the memory of the place and the rural woman's pivotal role in building family and society, making Al-Atawlah Festival a living model for preserving heritage and passing it on to new generations through modern, appealing methods.
