Qassim University, represented by its Institute of Studies and Consulting Services, in collaboration with the General Food Security Authority, has opened registration for the Food Loss and Waste Hackathon, held under the theme “Today We Innovate… for a Tomorrow Without Food Loss or Waste.”
Registration opens today, September 29, and continues through October 10, 2026, while the hackathon itself will take place on October 22–23, 2026.
The initiative brings together innovators, researchers, entrepreneurs, specialists, and sustainability enthusiasts to develop practical solutions that can help reduce food loss and waste across Saudi Arabia.
AI, Data and Technology to Address Food Waste
The hackathon focuses on using artificial intelligence, data, and emerging technologies to develop digital and operational solutions addressing challenges across the food value chain.
Participants will explore solutions for improving supply-chain efficiency, forecasting food demand, measuring food loss and waste indicators, and maximizing the efficient use of food resources.
Five Innovation Tracks
The hackathon features five main tracks:
- Technology and digital innovation
- Manufacturing and processing innovation
- Operational models and supply-chain innovation
- Business model and financing innovation
- Behavioral and awareness innovation
Who Can Participate?
The initiative targets university and college students, researchers in agriculture and supply chains, entrepreneurs, developers, designers, food-sector professionals, charities, food banks, and individuals interested in sustainability.
It also aims to strengthen collaboration between food-related sectors and support Saudi Vision 2030, the Sustainable Development Goals, and the national “Let It Last” program for reducing food loss and waste.
