Qassim University, represented by its Institute of Studies and Consulting Services, in collaboration with the General Food Security Authority (GFSA), is preparing to hold the Food Loss and Waste Hackathon under the theme “Today We Innovate… for a Tomorrow Without Food Loss or Waste.”

The initiative coincides with the International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste and is designed to bring together innovators, researchers, entrepreneurs, specialists, and sustainability enthusiasts to develop practical solutions that can be adopted and implemented across Saudi Arabia.

AI and Data at the Heart of Food Waste Solutions

The hackathon will focus on addressing food loss and waste across different stages of the food value chain by harnessing artificial intelligence, data, and modern technologies.

Participants will work on digital and operational solutions designed to improve supply-chain efficiency, forecast food demand, measure food loss and waste indicators, and make better use of available food resources.

Five Innovation Tracks

The hackathon features five main tracks:

  • Technology and digital innovation
  • Manufacturing and processing innovation
  • Operational models and supply-chain innovation
  • Business model and financing innovation
  • Behavioral and awareness innovation

The tracks are designed to encourage solutions that approach food loss and waste from technological, operational, economic, and behavioral perspectives.

Students, Researchers and Entrepreneurs Invited to Participate

The hackathon targets university and college students, researchers specializing in agriculture and supply chains, entrepreneurs, developers, designers, food-sector professionals, charities, food banks, and individuals interested in sustainability.

It also aims to strengthen cooperation between food-related sectors, support Saudi Arabia’s national “Let It Last” program for reducing food loss and waste, and contribute to the objectives of Saudi Vision 2030 and the Sustainable Development Goals.

Registration opens today, September 29, 2026, and continues until October 10, while the hackathon will take place on October 22–23, 2026.
