Qassim University Engineering Forum Discusses "Engineering Quality of Life" and Hosts a Wind Turbine Design Hackathon
Buraidah, 8 May 2026
The eighth Scientific Engineering Forum at Qassim University featured a panel session titled "Engineering Quality of Life" alongside a specialized engineering hackathon on designing and operating wind turbines, as part of the forum held in Buraidah.
The events drew academics, specialists and students of the College of Engineering, in support of engineering innovation and a stronger link between academia and practical application.
A Panel on Engineering's Role in Improving Quality of Life
The session was moderated by Dr. Abdullah Al Ghufais, Associate Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering. Participants discussed quality of life as a continuous process that requires integration between engineering, urban planning and human behavior.
The speakers said modern engineering is no longer limited to building infrastructure and systems but is directly tied to designing people's daily experience and balancing efficiency, sustainability and community comfort.
Energy, Water and Urban Planning on the Agenda
The session addressed the effect of energy, water, transport and the built environment on quality of life, and the role of cities and urban planning in shaping human behavior through the design of streets, public spaces and patterns of movement.
Participants also discussed the gap between ideal engineering design and the real behavior of users, stressing that the success of engineering solutions depends on understanding people and their daily needs.
An Engineering Hackathon to Design and Run a Wind Turbine
The forum hosted a hackathon titled "Wind Turbine from Design to Operation", supervised by the enrichment events committee, in which student teams from across the College of Engineering designed, assembled and ran wind turbines.
The teams manufactured the required parts using 3D printing before completing assembly and operation successfully, in a hands-on experience that strengthened participants' innovation and teamwork skills.
Honoring Teams and Supporting Engineering Innovation
At the close of the events the participating teams were honored and prizes awarded to the top performers, as part of the university's efforts to encourage engineering creativity and develop the applied skills that prepare professionals to meet future challenges.
