King Salman Academy for Arabic Language Boosts Arabic's Presence at 10th Arab Geographical Names Forum, Showcases Standardization Initiatives
The King Salman Global Academy for Arabic Language took an active part in the 10th Arab Forum on Geographical Names, held in Jeddah under the theme "Strengthening Relations and Ties Among Arab Countries in Geographical Names." The Academy's Secretary-General, Dr. Abdullah bin Saleh Al-Washmi, said the participation reflects the Academy's commitment to supporting the Arabic language and boosting its presence locally and internationally as part of the Human Capability Development Program, in line with Saudi Vision 2030's goals.
Dr. Al-Washmi noted that standardizing geographical names and developing language policy using modern technology are important steps toward strengthening Arabic's presence in digital applications and facilitating its use in smart systems and maps.
The Academy set up an information booth at the forum's accompanying exhibition and took part in a panel discussion titled "Language Policies, Computing and Their Applications for Geographical Names: The Experience of the King Salman Global Academy for Arabic Language," which examined the role of modern technology in developing language policy, computerizing geographical names, and future avenues for strengthening Arabic's presence in the digital transformation era.
The session also covered "Language Planning and Policy and Its Relationship to Geographical Names" and the importance of standardization in lexicography, with the Academy showcasing the role of its "Siwar" digital dictionaries platform in documenting and standardizing geographical names and boosting joint Arab efforts. The session also highlighted the "Natural Parks Glossary" as a successful example illustrating the importance of preserving the identity of geographical names.
Through its international participation, the King Salman Academy aims to strengthen its authority in the Arabic language, support automated language-processing technologies, develop local and international linguistic content, and facilitate the teaching of Arabic while raising global awareness of it.
