The fourth edition of Noor Riyadh 2024 hosted a notable panel discussion titled "Light and the City" at JAX District in Diriyah, exploring how light art shapes cities' identity and boosts global cultural exchange. Held under the theme "Between Earth and Sky," the festival is part of the Riyadh Art program, which aims to turn the Saudi capital into an open-air art gallery.

Art's Role in Shaping Riyadh's Cultural Identity

The session was moderated by Nouf Al-Munif, director of Noor Riyadh, with the participation of artist Abdullah Al-Othman and artist and researcher Muath Al-Awfi. Al-Munif said the festival has succeeded in highlighting Riyadh's cultural and artistic identity, noting:
"Noor Riyadh has become more than just a celebration — it is a platform for cultural exchange bringing together more than 400 local and international artists, strengthening Riyadh's standing as a global cultural destination."

She added that the festival reflects Riyadh's evolution as a city blending authenticity with modernity, noting that light art helps document the relationship between the city and its residents and encourages community participation, with art becoming part of everyday life.

The Impact of Sensory Elements on Urban Identity

Artist Abdullah Al-Othman discussed the importance of sensory elements, such as light and scent, in strengthening people's connection to cities, stressing Noor Riyadh's role in presenting art as a means of documenting this relationship. He added:
"Art is a tool for exploring a city's identity and presenting it on a global stage, making Riyadh a cultural hub that attracts diverse cultures and creative expressions."

Artworks and a Comprehensive Community Program

The festival continues through 14 December 2024 across three main hubs:

  2. Wadi Hanifah
  3. JAX District
