Jeddah Book Fair 2024, organized by the Literature, Publishing and Translation Commission, hosted a seminar titled "Transformations of the Arabic Novel," reviewing the profound shifts the Arabic novel has undergone over recent decades as a reflection of the social and cultural changes taking place across the Arab world, both internally and externally.

Panelists discussed how the concept of the Arabic novel has evolved from a literary form once viewed as part of a single, unified Arab experience into a diverse literary landscape expressing the particularities of different regions. They noted that the Gulf novel, barely visible three decades ago, has today become an indispensable part of modern Arabic literature, with Gulf novels now topping the list of works most sought after by Arab publishers thanks to their ability to tackle local issues from fresh, engaging angles.

Panelists attributed this shift to the novel's nature as a vehicle for expressing human experience, noting that the Gulf novel today spotlights questions of identity, social change and cultural relations, earning it a distinct place on the Arab literary scene.
