Hail, Saudi Arabia – July 4, 2025 (9 Muharram 1447 AH)

The craft of Sadu weaving captured the attention of visitors to "Hail House Festival 2025," in its fourth edition, held at Aja Park in Hail city, as this authentic heritage craft, which embodies the cultural depth of Bedouin life, shone in a dedicated corner celebrating handmade heritage and giving it renewed life before new generations.

A group of professional craftswomen from the region presented remarkable examples of Sadu handiwork through live demonstrations showing the steps of the work from spinning through to finished pieces, amid strong engagement from visitors and traditional-craft enthusiasts.

Sadu Weaving: Heritage Woven from Wool and Hair

Craftswoman Umm Khalid explained that she has practiced the craft for many years, producing various types of traditional fabrics such as shalaki, roz, taffeta, chiffon and wire-mesh cloth, among others, which she uses to design clothing and decorative pieces.

Umm Mohammed, meanwhile, revealed that she uses natural materials such as camel hair and goat and sheep wool, and traditional tools such as the spindle, needle and wooden stakes, adding that she has innovated by combining Sadu weaving with palm-frond weaving to produce unique pieces reflecting local creativity in reviving heritage.

Reviving Heritage, Motivating Craftspeople

This corner is one of the standout stops at Hail House Festival, which this year focuses on supporting handicrafts to coincide with the Year of Handicrafts 2025, as part of efforts to:

  • Preserve traditional crafts from disappearing
  • Economically empower craftswomen through direct display and sales platforms
  • Pass handcraft skills to new generations through live interactive demonstrations

The festival affirms its commitment to achieving one of the goals of Saudi Vision 2030 in strengthening national identity and leveraging heritage as a pillar of cultural and tourism development.
