The Rabab — A Heritage Melody Enchanting Al Baha's Summer Visitors and Reviving Folk Tradition
Al Baha | 28 Muharram 1447 AH – July 23, 2025
In an atmosphere steeped in the scent of the past and the spirit of heritage, the sound of the rabab is ringing out at the Al-Aqeeq Summer Shopping and Entertainment Festival, organized by Al-Aqeeq governorate's municipality at Taibat Al-Ism Park, amid strong turnout from locals and visitors. The rabab remains one of the most prominent folk musical symbols still holding a special place in the hearts of Al Baha's people.
Rabab performances draw the crowd's attention for the artistic and cultural value they carry, spanning decades of tradition, as the instrument features in folk gatherings, camps and the gathering known as “al-shabba,” forming an authentic part of the southern region's musical identity.
A heritage instrument, a sound steeped in history. Player Aidh Al-Ghamdi explained that the rabab is a traditional single-stringed instrument, handmade from local wood, typically in a rectangular shape strung with animal hide, while a bow made of bamboo strung with “sabib” (horsetail hair) is used to produce sound as it is drawn across the taut string.
The rabab at the heart of folk arts. The rabab is considered a pillar of Saudi folklore, especially in Bedouin arts and the chants that accompany old Nabati poetry and stories, making it an important element of national celebrations and festivals, and reflecting the richness of Saudi society's culture and its commitment to preserving its musical legacy.
An active role in boosting local culture. The rabab's presence at the Al Baha summer festival is an effective initiative to preserve heritage and introduce it to new generations, amid the diverse artistic and cultural events the festival offers as part of Saudi Vision 2030's goals of preserving national heritage and strengthening Saudi identity.
