Sign Language at Madinah Book Fair 2025: A Milestone Step Toward Cultural Inclusion and Empowering the Deaf
Madinah | 3 August 2025. As part of its commitment to strengthening cultural inclusion and empowering people with disabilities, the Madinah International Book Fair 2025 launched a pioneering initiative integrating sign-language interpreters into its cultural programs, making events directly accessible to deaf audiences and enabling them to fully engage with the seminars and literary and intellectual sessions hosted by the fair.
This step is one of the notable initiatives adopted this year by the Literature, Publishing and Translation Commission, as part of its pursuit of cultural justice and ensuring access to knowledge content for all segments of society, without hearing, language or physical barriers.
The dialogue seminars accompanying the fair featured live sign-language interpretation on stage, allowing deaf audiences to follow the cultural and literary discussions and engage with their content, within an inclusive environment that embraces diversity and welcomes everyone.
A number of sign-language specialists taking part in the coverage praised the organizing committee's awareness and its keenness to include this important group in the cultural scene, affirming that the initiative represents a qualitative shift in empowering people with disabilities, and calling for institutionalizing this approach across all national cultural events in future.
Through this initiative, the Commission affirms its deep commitment to making culture accessible as a human right, adopting practical solutions that strengthen the inclusion of under-represented groups and give them an equal opportunity to learn, engage in dialogue and interact.
The fair continues its activities until 4 August 2025, daily from 2 p.m. until midnight, offering a varied program of literary and scientific publications, workshops and interactive activities, in a knowledge experience that embodies the national vision of empowering people as the focus of development.
