Riyadh, October 6, 2025 — In a cultural moment reflecting Saudi Arabia's leadership in supporting the knowledge industry, translation initiatives have taken center stage at the Riyadh International Book Fair 2025, marking a qualitative shift in the structure of the Arab cultural scene and redrawing the map of interaction between languages and cultures through strategic projects aimed at building an integrated Arab knowledge system.

Leading these initiatives is the Arab Translation Observatory, the first specialized Arab reference for monitoring and documenting translation activity across the Arab world. Launched by the Saudi Ministry of Culture through the Literature, Publishing and Translation Commission in partnership with ALECSO, the project serves as a regional hub for data and information tracking the state of Arabic translation and its future direction.

The Observatory aims to document the work of translators and researchers working from and into Arabic, and to build a comprehensive knowledge database that helps shape cultural policy and raise the quality of translated content. It also lets researchers and interested parties track the most commonly translated languages and the most active scientific and literary fields, making it a strategic tool for decision-makers and cultural institutions across the Arab world.

Since its launch in October 2022, the Observatory has brought together more than 800 specialists across various translation fields, and its digital platform now documents more than 100,000 records of books translated from and into Arabic, alongside 2,000 registered publishing houses — making it one of the most significant modern Arab cultural projects.

Elsewhere at the fair, the Tarjim platform has emerged as one of the most ambitious projects aimed at reviving translation activity in the Kingdom, offering a fully integrated model that connects Saudi translators with publishing houses and provides them with professional and financial support, as part of a vision to turn translation into a sustainable industry rather than an individual pursuit.

The platform applies a rigorous quality-assessment process through specialist consultants before matching translators with publishing houses that handle the release of approved works, while also offering translators direct financial support to strengthen professionalism and sustainability in the sector.

The Tarjim initiative goes beyond the technical side, reflecting a broader Saudi cultural vision that sees translation as a bridge for civilizational exchange and a tool for expanding Arab knowledge and engaging with world cultures — helping enrich Arabic content globally and reinforcing the Kingdom's position as a hub of cultural and intellectual influence in the region.

Between the Arab Translation Observatory and the Tarjim platform, the Riyadh International Book Fair 2025 is writing a new chapter in the history of modern Arab culture, with Riyadh at the center of a new Arabic translation renaissance that does more than celebrate heritage — it is laying the groundwork for a linguistic and cultural future that crosses borders.

The initiatives support the Kingdom's efforts to achieve the goals of Saudi Vision 2030 by strengthening culture's role in national development, building an innovative knowledge-based society that contributes to producing and transferring knowledge, and cementing the Kingdom's status as a leading cultural center in the Arab world.
