The prince opened the conference's accompanying exhibition, touring its booths and reviewing the most prominent innovations and research projects on display.
In his welcoming remarks, the University of Hail president thanked the Deputy Emir for his patronage and support of the university and its academic activities, noting that the conference aligns with Saudi Vision 2030 and reflects the Kingdom's commitment, under the leadership of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques and the Crown Prince, to achieving net-zero carbon emissions and promoting environmental and economic sustainability.
He noted that the Kingdom is a leading country in energy production, efficiency and source diversification, adding that the conference serves as a scientific platform bringing together scientists, decision-makers and international experts to discuss the latest developments in clean energy and the transition to a low-carbon economy.
For his part, Dr. Mohammed bin Abdullah Al-Shunaifi, dean of the College of Engineering and chairman of the conference's organizing committee, said the conference supports the Kingdom's ambitions for 50 percent of its electricity mix to come from renewable sources by 2030, with carbon emissions reduced by 278 million tonnes annually, working toward net-zero by 2060.
Al-Shunaifi said the conference features 13 keynote speakers from national and international leaders and experts, and includes scientific sessions, specialized workshops and an accompanying exhibition, noting that it received around 100 scientific papers from across the globe, of which 30 percent were accepted following scientific review, covering sustainable energy, green transformation and modern renewable energy technologies.
He added that the University of Hail was the first in the Kingdom to launch a bachelor's program in renewable energy engineering, in 2017, and has since graduated 86 engineers in the field. The college has also enrolled its first cohort of female students in industrial engineering this year, as part of its efforts to empower women in engineering disciplines.
The conference saw the signing of four cooperation agreements between the University of Hail and several entities, including:
- The Saudi Water Authority, in training and scientific research.
