Fierce Competition on Al-Ahsa's Turf

Amid growing interest in youth football and Saudi Arabia's commitment to strengthening its position as a leading sports hub, the city of Al-Ahsa is hosting the fifth edition of the WAFF U-23 Championship from March 20 to 26, 2024. Bringing together elite regional national teams alongside guests from further afield, the tournament offers young talents an ideal platform to showcase their skills and compete on the Asian and international stage.

Participants and Group Draw

The championship features eight national teams, including Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Iraq and the UAE, alongside South Korea, Thailand, Australia and Egypt, who were invited as guests of honor — underscoring the spirit of sportsmanship and cultural exchange among the players.

The teams were split into four groups of two. Saudi Arabia and Jordan were placed in Group One, facing off in a tough opening match of their tournament run. South Korea and Thailand landed in Group Two, Egypt and the UAE in Group Three, and Australia and Iraq round out Group Four.

Tournament Format

Each group's two teams face off in a single first-round match, with the winners advancing to the semifinals, which pit the champions of Groups Three and Four against each other, and the champions of Groups One and Two against each other. This format guarantees every team at least three matches, giving them optimal preparation for continental finals.

The championship kicks off March 20 with four key matches at Prince Abdullah bin Jalawi Stadium and Al-Fateh Club Stadium, with highly competitive matchups and strong sportsmanship expected.

Preparations and Expectations

Ahead of the championship, Saudi Arabia's U-23 national team trained under Brazilian coach Marcos Suarez, focusing on recovery and tactical drills to achieve peak performance.

Hosting this championship in Al-Ahsa doesn't just underscore the Kingdom's investment in youth football — it also highlights Saudi Arabia's strong organizational capabilities. Both participants and organizers are looking to match the success of previous editions, while giving national teams an ideal opportunity to prepare for upcoming challenges.

The WAFF U-23 Championship offers young players a superb platform to shine and compete, marking the start of a new phase of development in Asian and international football. Al-Ahsa is set to be the stage for some standout football performances.
