Starlink Satellites to Cross Saudi Skies on July 23: Where to Watch
A train of Starlink satellites can be seen in the skies over Saudi Arabia, particularly from cities on the west coast, on the evening of Sunday, July 23, 2023, at 7:38 pm Saudi time, according to satellite tracking software and data.
Dr. Sharaf Al-Sufyani, Chairman of the Board of the Afaq Astronomy Society, said the event is worth following and documenting with photos and videos, and can be seen clearly from a location away from light pollution.
Al-Sufyani added that the Starlink project aims to provide high-speed internet to remote areas with poor coverage, relying on a network of satellites orbiting in low Earth orbit. He noted that many of these satellites have already been launched and that the number is expected to exceed 40,000.
He stressed that Starlink will have a major impact on the telecommunications and internet industry worldwide, providing high-quality, affordable service in remote and rural areas not reached by traditional ground infrastructure, and contributing to high-speed internet for users in cities.
However, the project raises some challenges and concerns, such as its impact on outer space due to the growing number of satellites in low orbit, signal interference and disruption of astronomical observation, as well as questions of space ownership and competition with other companies developing similar projects.
