The Council of Universities Affairs, in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture, has launched the University Innovation Challenge 2026. The initiative aims to encourage students and researchers to develop high-impact solutions for environmental, water and agricultural challenges while advancing sustainable development in Saudi Arabia.
The challenge runs from 6 July to 10 October 2026, with applications open until 1 October 2026. It serves as a national platform bringing together academic expertise and young talent to develop innovative projects for vital sectors and turn research ideas into practical, scalable solutions.
The challenge has three main tracks: environment, including vegetation growth and afforestation; water, through solutions for greywater treatment and consumption efficiency; and agriculture, through initiatives that reduce food loss and waste and strengthen agricultural sustainability.
It targets university students across Saudi Arabia. Each team must include a faculty member as a supervisor and four to five students, supporting collaboration between academic and research communities and the development of innovative solutions suited to the needs of the target sectors.
The challenge reflects efforts to strengthen partnerships between academic institutions and government entities, support national innovation, and enable young people to contribute to sustainable solutions aligned with Saudi Vision 2030 and the development of an innovation-led knowledge economy.
