Al-Marjan Island is the Kingdom's first artificial island, built by Saudi Aramco and opened in 1411 AH (1991) in the reign of King Fahd on the Dammam Corniche at the end of the waterfront's southern breakwater, connected to the shore by a paved causeway. The circular island is about 300 metres across, with some 53,000 square metres of greenery, semi-circular seating over about 4 kilometres, parking for about 350 cars and the spiral "Malwiya" tower, about 30 metres high, at its centre.
In 2024 the Eastern Province Municipality tendered an investment project to redevelop the island with 65 semi-floating chalets, a restaurant and café zone, a marina and an open-air amphitheatre for events, and the investor began site works in January 2025.
