Visitors to "Theatre Tour" in Al-Baha Experience Maritime Heritage: Diving, Net-Making, and Fish Traps Come to Life
On Friday, April 4, 2025, Prince Sultan bin Abdulaziz Theatre in the Cultural Center in Al-Baha hosted live heritage events as part of the "Local Theatre Tour" project, organized by the Theatre and Performing Arts Commission in cooperation with the Theatre and Performing Arts Society. Visitors experienced an authentic cultural encounter recreating traditional maritime crafts that once formed a complete way of life in coastal communities.
The presentations ranged from live demonstrations of making fish traps ("qarageer") and multi-layered fishing nets, to showcasing the traditional craft of pearl diving in full detail — an interactive scene that drew visitors and revived the region's rich maritime heritage.
Craftsman Ahmed Al-Khamis, from Al-Ahsa governorate, explained that divers in the past used natural tools that did not harm the marine environment, such as palm-frond ("khaws") materials, noting that the craft required great precision and skill.
Craftsman Khaled Al-Huwaidi said that making "qarageer" follows exacting standards using nylon and fine threads woven in a special technique, with openings smaller than two inches for catching fish and shellfish, noting that it is a trade passed down through generations and one of the most important coastal crafts.
The net-making corner drew strong engagement from visitors, who learned about traditional fishing tools and techniques, how nets were rigged with hand-made weights, and the different timing of fishing between night and day. Attendees expressed their admiration for this rich experience, which brought back memories of their fathers and grandfathers and reconnected them with their authentic coastal roots.
