Hail, Saudi Arabia – July 6, 2025 (11 Muharram 1447 AH)

Traditional palm-frond weaving shone as one of the most prominent heritage corners at "Hail House Festival 2025," in its fourth edition, held at Aja Park, drawing the attention of visitors and tourists with hands-on demonstrations reflecting the ancestors' skill in shaping natural materials to meet their daily needs.

Craftswoman Umm Ashjan gave live demonstrations explaining the stages of making khaws products using palm fronds as raw material, turning them into household and traditional items with both aesthetic and functional value, such as bags, mats, brooms and baskets.

Precise Stages and Traditional Techniques Passed Down Through Generations

The craft of palm-frond weaving follows several stages, beginning with:

  • Cutting, washing and drying the fronds
  • Gathering them into bundles and soaking them in water until pliable
  • Sewing the bundles, trimming the edges and removing thorns
  • Coloring them with natural dyes to shape the final pieces

Umm Ashjan explained that the craft still maintains a presence in markets and traditional shops in the Hail region, with its products used for many occasions, serving as an environmentally friendly choice and a beautiful alternative to industrial tools.
