Al-Razfah: A Time-Honored Folk Art That Enlivens Najran's Occasions and Reinforces Cultural Identity
📍 Najran – August 11, 2025
Najran continues to preserve its rich cultural heritage through a variety of folk arts whose rhythms carry the scent of the past and the authenticity of the present, telling stories of belonging and pride in the Kingdom’s long history. Al-Razfah is one of the most prominent of these folk arts, distinguished by its spirited character and joyful atmosphere that combines authenticity with national spirit.
This art form is especially prominent at national occasions, holidays and weddings, where young people take part enthusiastically, drawing on skills inherited from parents and grandparents, while older generations find in it an echo of cherished memories. Al-Razfah takes on added significance during the summer holiday season, enlivening family celebrations and filling gatherings with joy that reflects the region’s deep-rooted culture and customs.
The performance is done without musical instruments: performers line up in two facing rows and recite verses of poetry carrying meanings of pride and praise, while the two rows move in coordinated harmony. In the middle of the arena, a special performance known as "al-si’b" is carried out by two people alternating turns, adding vibrancy and excitement to the scene.
Al-Razfah holds a special place in the hearts of Najran’s residents, not merely as an artistic heritage but as a cultural symbol that reinforces national identity, affirming the ability of folk arts to endure and remain influential despite changing times and the rise of modern art forms.
