The Makkah Museum of Antiquities and Heritage occupies Al-Zahir Palace, built by order of King Abdulaziz as a guest palace between 1365 AH (1946) and 1372 AH (1952) in the Al-Zahir district. The palace was converted into a museum opened to the public in 1427 AH (2006) on about 3,425 square metres, with 13 galleries covering the Kingdom's antiquities, the pre-Islamic era, the history of Makkah and the Hajj, manuscripts, coins and crafts.
The museum receives school trips and visitors and takes part in the Museums Commission's seasonal programmes.
