Makkah Library was founded in 1370 AH (around 1951) by order of King Abdulaziz in the Souq Al-Lail district of Shi'b Bani Hashim, east of the Grand Mosque, on the site traditionally known as the birthplace of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. Its construction was supervised by Sheikh Abbas Qattan, then mayor of the Holy Capital, and funded by Fatima Al-Qattan. The two-storey building holds a collection of rare manuscripts catalogued by the Al-Furqan Islamic Heritage Foundation.
