Prince Mohammad bin Abdulaziz International Airport lies about 15 to 20 kilometres north-east of Madinah. Its origins go back to the mid-twentieth century, while its new terminal began operating in April 2015 with capacity for 8 million passengers a year in its first phase on 4 million square metres, with a three-phase expansion plan running to 2039.
It is the first Saudi airport fully built and operated by the private sector, through Tibah Airports, the first airport outside the Americas to earn LEED Gold certification, and was named best regional airport in the Middle East by Skytrax in 2020 and 2024. It receives Hajj and Umrah flights and hosts pilgrim-welcome programmes and the distribution of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques' gift.
